Abstract
The present study aimed to explore previous experiences of Portuguese elderly couples in receiving the diagnosis of their children with Trisomy 21. It was developed using the oral history method, with the participation of fourteen couples. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed based on content analysis. The results revealed that the diagnosis disclosure was a complex and difficult experience for couples to live through, accompanied by insufficient information about the syndrome, the childcare and the support network. The reactions of parents, families and friends to the diagnosis were, initially, hard-hitting, but ultimately they accepted and supported the children, without discrimination.
