Abstract
Conceptual clarification is part of the development process of a discipline. In Nursing, the word needs has been extensively used and maybe abused. The present article discusses the use of the word and the concepts “necessary”, “need” and “needs” from a philosophical perspective, namely aristotelic. Means of “needs” used in nursing theorization are analysed as well as in the professional discourse. Probable intervening factors are identified. The concept “needs” is contextualized according to time and stage of nursing theoretical development and exaggerations are pointed out. A concept of needs is proposed, considering the person cared for as central in determining the necessary care.
