Abstract
The goal in this study, in context is to understand the lived experience of feeling respected during labor in Hospital. Participants were 32 mothers that lived the experience between January 2006 and July 2007. The data was obtained through phenomenological interviews. The qualitative analysis of the reports, under the phenomenological approach has followed the method proposed by Amedeo Giorgi. Four major themes emerged: paradoxes and apparent misunderstandings: being and not being cared with respect; caring/care; power sharing and process time. Findings are discussed according to the theoretical references that used some ideas of Martin Heidegger, as well as from other authors that followed him. The study enabled the comprehension of some facets of mother’s experiences on the relation of caring established with health staff, seizing the meanings ascribed by them to the experience of feeling respected and the repercussion of this reality on their lives and on the life of their families.
