Abstract
The effective management of symptoms is considered to be an essential component of nursing care in several clinical conditions, however it takes on a particular tone in chronic illnesses such as HIV/AIDS. The need of a structured nursing intervention program arises from the literature review associated to its importance and self-management of symptoms as well as the adherence to the antiretroviral therapy. The present study has as its objective to evaluate the effectiveness of a nursing intervention program (previously elaborated and applied) so as to contribute towards the self-management of symptoms and adherence to antiretroviral
therapy in an adult with HIV/AIDS allowing them to experience the process of disease with the best possible level of well-being.
We foresee the realisation of a quasi-experimental study, with the recruitment of those who will be subjected to the intervention being made by the participants included in the validation of the data collection instruments for the Portuguese population. This is a longitudinal study with an evaluation performed pre- and post-intervention.
