Abstract
Disability and chronic illness in children and youths may negatively affect their functionality. Over the last years we have been witnessing a proliferation of specialized camps, particularly in Europe. These programs were based on therapeutic recreation and emerged as a form of intervention, but lack evaluation. The aim of this study was evaluate the effects of these camps in functionality, self-esteem, self-concept and self-efficacy in children and youths with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Ten studies constituted our sample. Most findings show that these camps are extremely important and have significant positive effects on children and youths with special needs in the areas of independent functionality in activities of daily living, self-esteem and self-efficacy. These camps can provide excellent places for nursing intervention in rehabilitation, health promotion, therapeutic management, and contribute towards a better quality of life for these children and youths.
